ZipThaw Dry Plasma Thawing System

ZipThaw is an FDA-cleared, dry, portable, precise and easy-to-use plasma thawing medical device that melts and thaws fresh frozen plasma at the point of care. It uses a disposable, RFID-enabled ZipSleeve with triple-redundancy fail-safes to reduce cross-contamination; the sleeve continuously monitors and reports the specimen’s own temperature rather than its surroundings, and tracks its use status so it cannot be reused past expiration.

The operator uses an integrated barcode scanner to identify the specimen, slides the plasma bag into the disposable ZipSleeve, inserts it into the ZipThaw chamber, and presses a button for a Melt or Thaw preset; the cycle can be stopped at any time. Each chamber operates independently so multiple specimens can be melted or thawed continuously, with a precise temperature display and alarm, and each thaw tracked on a hard drive for later export.

ZipThawing plasma has been shown (San Diego Blood Bank / UC San Diego School of Medicine, 2019; COVID-19 convalescent plasma study, 2020) to preserve maximum levels of coagulation factors and antibodies (IgA, IgM, IgG) compared to pre-freeze levels.
